If you follow Toronto bloggers on Instagram, you’ve most likely seen this “aesthetically pleasing” restaurant on your feed and you certainly can’t blame someone for wanting to take pictures in this lovely diner. Saturday Dinette mixes old-school style and charm with innovative and soulful comfort food, leaving no detail overlooked and creating a warm and welcoming experience that truly feels like you’ve been invited into someone’s home. Adorable tea cups, marble tables, vinyl records on display, cookbooks to flip through, beautiful abstract watercolour murals, and classic images of Black history posted on almost every wall- there was no way to get bored while waiting for your food.
Speaking of the food…
WHAT WE ORDERED
Herbed Poached Eggs
This light and ultra-green dish was everything we wanted when it came to a healthier option that was still packed with flavour. Poached eggs on top of a crispy corn arepa were paired perfectly with creamy guac and zesty tomatillo salsa. The egg-topped arepa was surrounded by green pea purée and finished with leafy greens and a drizzle of oil dressing. Everything about this dish was bright, fresh and hit all the right notes when it came to flavour and texture.
Coconut tomato purée mixed with rice and topped with a fried egg, grilled pineapple and refreshing mint yogurt- it was certainly an unusual ensemble of ingredients for our palettes. This dish seemed to be influenced by Thai cuisine, yet with a Southern touch pairing bulky rice and a greasy fried egg with fruity and minty flavours, proving to be the ultimate unique and satisfying flavour combination.
The diverse menu has something for everyone and it’s clear Chef Suzanne Barr certainly knows what she’s doing in the kitchen. Fair warning, this diner was a small space and we give major props to the staff and chefs for being able to maneuver their way around the restaurant and provide delicious food and kind service under such circumstances. So, cozy up with your loved ones and enjoy brunch at Saturday Dinette and don’t be fooled by their name, they’re open 7 days a week!
